Mekong Delta to Become a Friendly Destination
“Mekong Delta can be seen as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Asia with beautiful natural landscapes, but it may soon lose this advantage due to rapid infrastructure development. And it take years to reinstate those precious values,” said Prof. Ernst Sagemueller, general director of the Europe-Indochina Institute for Tourism, at a recent conference entitled “Potential and Development Opportunity in Mekong Delta” in the city of Can Tho.

A flying lantern of the Khmers
|
23 May 2007
In Soc Trang Province as well as surrounding areas of the Mekong Delta, tourists can join in many unique festivals, including Chol Chnam Thmay, Dolta and Ooc Om Bok of the Khmer people
Besides the main ceremonies, people, including tourists, have opportunities to join interesting games like ghe ngo (long boat) racing and releasing traditional flying lanterns and floating lanterns. It is said that the flying lanterns and floating lanterns keep away darkness, impure things and sadness from the village.
A flying lantern is made from giay tau bach, a kind of Chinese paper, which gives it solidity, or from nylon if beauty is the goal. Its appearance is simple. It can be a long pipe, a square or a cube. The Khmers use strong bamboo pieces to create the frame and draw many pictures on the paper or nylon like fish, flowers and trees. In the middle of the lantern, people put a silk or cotton wad soaked kerosene. The special character of the lantern is that its bottom is open while its top is closed. When the wad burns the hot smoke makes the lantern fly higher and higher. The height reached by each lantern depends on the lantern’s weight and smoke’s quantity.
It is beautiful watching many lanterns flying over the river or floating on the river at night. People beat drums or sing songs to encourage their lanterns.
