Hoa Binh Travel Guide
Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh province, set amongst some
of northern Vietnam’s most
stunning scenery, approximately 135km from Hanoi and 60km from Hoa Binh. Mai Chau is the
base for trekking tours which allow tourists to observe the relatively
untouched lifestyle of various minority peoples, affording travelers the opportunity
to engage in cultural and physical activity.
What to Do ?
Trekking to minority villages is a popular activity in Mai
Chau, and it is one of the closest places from Ha Noi where you can visit a
“real” Montangard village. Hang Kia village and Van village are particularly
recommended. A typical trek further afield
covers 7km to 8km; a local guide can be hired for about US$5.
Other activities include staying overnight in one of the
Thai stilt houses or walking in the beautiful valley through the rice fields.
Besides trekking, the Sunday market is worth a visit. In the
market, people from different minorities living in the mountains come to Mai
Chau to sell their products. The Sunday market is also an occasion to enjoy
traditional Thai dishes and to participate in traditional dances.
The surrounding villages of Ban Lac and Pom Coong are great
for a morning walk, whether you spend the night in a village home stay or at
the new Mai Chau Lodge. Local guides can be hired from the Mai Chau Guesthouse
for longer treks.
When to Go ?
Mai Chau has a tropical climate. From June to September, it
is rainy and hot (25-30 C) with humid conditions and afternoon monsoon rains.
During the months of November to March the weather will tend to be drier but
with colder temperatures (10-15 C). You
can visit Mai Chau all year round, but the best time is from September to
April.
How To Get There ?
There is no direct public transport from Hanoi to Mai Chau; however, buses to nearby
Hoa Binh are plentiful. From Hoa Binh there are several scheduled buses to Mai Chau
daily. These buses usually stop at Tong Dau junction, where travelers can hop
on a “xe om” for the 5km ride to Mai Chau proper.
